We’ve previously written about the various elements to be considered when making a first vehicle operator licence (VOL) application. This time we look at making changes to a VOL.
There are four main scenarios when making changes to a VOL:
- Changes that can be made simply via logging into your VOL portal
- Changes that require a variation application (no fee payable)
- Changes that require a variation application (fees payable)
- Changes that require a brand new application to be made

If you need to make simple changes to your existing VOL, in most cases you can do this by logging in to your VOL account. Some examples include adding, removing or changing details relating to your Directors, Transport Manager, registered address, maintenance provider(s) or your tachograph analysis provider. There are no fees to pay in these instances.
You must update the VOL portal as soon as possible when making these changes.
In this series we also cover:
- Changes to Operating Centres & Vehicles Being Operated
- Changes in Business Structure or Ownership
- Notification of New Convictions & Fixed Penalties
